Ovusense: Fertility Monitor for Women with PCOS [Updated]

ovusenseUpdated October 2016

Three years ago, I provided an overview of ovulation monitors on PCOS Diva http://pcosdiva.com/2013/08/ask-amy-ovulation-predictors-and-pcos/

I wanted to update you because since then my favorite monitor, Ovusense, has made some exciting upgrades.

Introducing…. OvuSense Realtime Fertility Monitor

What makes this monitor different and more effective is that it measures ‘core body temperature’ inside the vagina and therefore by passes all issues with luteinizing hormone (LH) which most ovulation predictors monitor. In women with PCOS, a higher LH-pulse rate will often mean traditional ovulation predictors are useless since they measure a LH surge.  It has been shown that urine-based ovulation predictors are ineffective for over 75% of women with PCOS.  Women with PCOS have elevated LH hormone, so there can be many false positives early in cycle.  Also, urinary LH measurement is only predictive of the onset of ovulation and cannot determine the date of ovulation or anovulation.

In addition to predicting ovulation with 99% percent accuracy, OvuSense is the only product on the market right now that will tell you if you haven’t ovulated in a given cycle  (which is extremely important for PCOS with irregular cycles).  It can also tell you the length of your luteal phase and show you your complete cycle pattern, more accurately than any other product on the market.

How does it work?

OvuSense takes temperature measurements in the vagina via a personal “Sensor” (similar to a tampon) and a data “Reader.”  The Sensor takes temperature readings every five minutes each night, when the body temperature is most stable. In the morning, you place the Sensor on the Reader and download the data. The Reader processes and charts your data, and will provide you information on your fertility as you progress through your cycle. Once the Reader has confirmed that you’ve ovulated you can stop using the Sensor for that particular cycle. OvuSense is designed to collect and display information about your fertility in real time. It predicts ovulation using an accurate method during your cycle, and then detects ovulation.

The OvuSense will pinpoint the exact date of ovulation with 99% accuracy which is the same as ultrasound.

OvuSense will also predict a “fertile window” for your following cycle.  And if you have an irregular cycle as your fertility information updates during  each cycle, the more cycles you use OvuSense, the more accurate the prediction is likely to be for future cycles.

So as long as you ovulate, even if it’s occasionally, OvuSense will be useful for you. In addition, because OvuSense is tracking and graphing temperature – the level of which is directly related to the level of progesterone – the temperature graph will help you better understand where you are in your cycle.

100% patients found OvuSense Sensor comfortable to wear and easy to use.

It’s important to understand how the Sensor has been made and tested and is classified as a Class 2 medical device, so when OvuSense confirms ovulation for you, it does so with 99% clinically proven accuracy.

The Sensor material grade is validated for continuous akin to a permanent implant (like breast implants, for example) use.  As a regulated medical device, there is extensive toxicity testing and is FDA approved.

An “Ovulation Promise”

OvuSense also offers what they call an “Ovulation Promise” –  If you use OvuSense for 180 days/6 months and OvuSense does not detect ovulation for you, they will fully refund your money.  See more about this guarantee here:  http://www.ovusense.com/uk/guarantee/

Some exciting news for 2016 – OvuSense has now released an App version of their product!  The price is $149.00  in the USA and there are rolling subscription  plans available so you only pay for the months you need to use it and can stop at any point without obligation.  In addition, OvuSense is selling in the UK, NL, DK and Australia with more countries planned for 2017 including Canada.
