Visualize Your New Year and Make It Happen

Guest post by Karen Deichmann

The New Year is a great time to spend a few minutes dreaming, pretending you are waving your magic wand, and getting really clear on what you would like to be, do, or have in the New Year. Meeting your goals does a body good by releasing feel-good hormones, and that is always a good thing when it comes to keeping your energy levels high so your body can keep working on healing. With each success, our brain releases a chemical called dopamine, which is one of our “happy” hormones. When dopamine flows into the brain’s reward pathway (the part responsible for pleasure, learning, and motivation), we not only feel greater concentration, but are inspired to re-experience the activity that caused the chemical release in the first place.

I have always believed we can get what we want, the hard part is knowing what that is! Each year, I like to participate in a New Year’s Visualization.  At the beginning of the New Year, I get quiet, focus on my breathing, then ask myself, “what do I want?”  I will identify about 20 items on the “right away list”, which is the low hanging fruit like cleaning out a certain closet or getting new kitchen rugs, reconnecting with a friend, then I will identify a larger goal that might take 3 – 5 years, and then ultimately a “stretch” goal that seems like a really crazy “totally dreaming” goal.  Recently, I pulled out a New Year’s Eve visualization from 2015. I was surprised and happy to see 8 out of 10 of my short-term goals were checked off, and many of my 3-5-year goals were already complete!

If you would like to participate in a 15-minute New Year’s guided visualization, listen here…
