PCOS Foundation Raises Awareness

Guest post by Natalie Witte

The PCOS Foundation has wasted no time initiating education and awareness for women and adolescent girls. Since the day the organization was founded by President Lisa Benjamini-Allon, education and awareness efforts were initiated to take action against Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a common disorder that is putting the health of millions of women and adolescent girls at risk.

Lisa Benjamini-Allon has more than ten years of experience in healthcare, is a personal trainer, and coaches others in

the areas of life and wellness. Throughout her career, Lisa witnessed the struggles and frustrations of women diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) while working alongside her husband, Dr. Michael Allon. These women experienced symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, uncontrollable weight gain, insulin resistance, hirsutism, high blood pressure, depression, among others. These women suffered for years, only to find that many of their symptoms and the resulting lifelong consequences such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, infertility, could have been eliminated or controlled with early diagnosis and treatment.

In July of 2010, Lisa Benjamini-Allon created the PCOS Foundation to help make a difference in the lives of these women. The mission of the PCOS Foundation is to spread awareness through public and professional programs to increase recognition of and control or eliminate the lifetime risks associated with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Through these efforts we hope to establish more programs that will help women and adolescents affected with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) obtain treatment through medical lifestyle management.  The PCOS Foundation’s programs are centered around three key concepts: awareness, education and outreach.  Through our annual events, yearly donations and endless support we have been able to successfully create programs that adhere to these concepts.  From workplace outreach, support groups, educational brochures and the several other educational avenues, the PCOS Foundation has made a significant impact on its followers and supporters.

During National PCOS Awareness Month in September, we will be holding our annual Amerejuve 2012 PCOS Awareness 5K Fun Run/Walk.  The event will take place on September 23, 2012 at the Downtown Aquarium in Houston. We are so grateful for our fantastic sponsors, volunteers and supporters who make this event possible. Live music, complimentary breakfast, giveaways, prizes, and fun will all take place at this powerful event that helps females live happier, healthier lives. If you would like to “Make a Stand” for women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), please visit www.pcosfoundation.org to see how you can help.  All contributions to the PCOS Foundation go towards creating more educational programs and creating more chapters nationwide.  We want to help the females in your city as well.  Interested in helping us make it happen?
