The #1 PCOS Fast Food – A Smoothie!
By Amy Medling founder of PCOS Diva
When you think fast food, you probably think of greasy hamburgers and trans fat fries. Smoothies have redefined my idea of fast food. My fast food go-to is actually nourishing, inexpensive and makes me feel terrific.
A staple of the PCOS diet and PCOS lifestyle, my basic smoothie recipe literally takes about a minute to whip up, and you can drink it on the go. You can change it with the season or your mood by swapping fruit. I find myself reaching for the blender when I have none of my usual protein staples in the fridge. That’s when the kids get grilled frozen waffles for breakfast or grilled cheese for lunch, and I’ll have a smoothie.
There are tons of great smoothie recipes as well as other PCOS friendly recipes in my seasonal meal plans or download my FREE smoothie guide and recipe book. Try a few!
The PCOS Diva Smoothie
1 cup Dairy Alternative Milk
1 scoop PCOS Diva Power Protein
1 T PCOS Diva Power Greens
2 t PCOS Diva Fiber Powder
1/2 frozen banana
1/2 cup frozen fruit (any of the following raspberries, blueberries, peaches, strawberries)
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
handful of greens (kale, collards, or spinach)
Blend all ingredients until smooth.
I usually make myself a smoothie every morning for breakfast. Watch this video below to see how simple these are to create:

This looks great! I have started doing something similar in the mornings and am loving it! It keeps me full, helps me avoid having to ‘turn to’ breads, bagels, cereals …and feels like I’m getting a treat to boot!
Can’t wait to try this!
I think you will like it -especially if you can find the Jay Robb powder. It really helps me with cravings. The virgin coconut oil also helps with blood sugar. More on that later. Please post variations on my recipe if you happen to experiment.
That powder is so expensive 🙁
I know it is pricey, but the best place to buy it is at Vitamin Shoppe. http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/store/en/browse/sku_detail.jsp?id=J1-1001
It ends up being about $1.60 per serving – maybe even less because I don’t use two scoops. So I figure even with the expensive protein powder, a smoothie is still cheaper than a lunch or breakfast out.
I’ve been trying a Dr. Oz smoothie per a co workers advice. It’s 1c juice, half banana, 3 strawberries, 2tbs whey protein powder, 2tbs ground flaxseed, 1tbs chia seeds, 1tbs psyllium husk, and 1tbs wheat germ. I think I will try swapping the juice for the almond milk and add the virgin coconut oil. Thanks for the suggestion!
Trying my first smoothie right now. I’ve never had coconut milk or oil before…but it’s not too bad!! Do you think it would hurt to add a little Stevia to it?
Good for you Genny – sure add some stevia!
How many shakes are acceptable to do in a day if u have a high sweets craving?
I would just stick to one shake a day.
I have been making this but substituted yogurt for the banana. I am getting a looser consistency that is easier to drink. Should I be concerned that the calories are around 500?
Thanks, Amy. You are fantastic!
Michelle-
I don’t count calories. I focus on eating clean, whole food. I can easily substitute one meal a day with one of these smoothies. Thanks for your kind words!
Amy,
I have two questions re: the smoothie recipe. It calls for one scoop of Growing Naturals Brown Rice Vanilla Protein Powder and one scoop Trader Joes Greens Powder.
First question, what is Trader Joes Greens Powder and is there a substitute you can suggest? I do have the Growing Naturals Brown Rice Protein Powder.
Second question, what amount is a “scoop”? My Growing Naturals didn’t come with a scoop. The serving size is 1/3 cup, just want to make sure that is what you are referring to.
Thanks!
Mary
Why not use real milk? I’m new to this website and just wondering. The studies about the fats in dairy helping with fertility AND weight loss are awesome.
Diana-
You will want to read Don’t Be a Dairy Queen post. In fact Walter Willet who did the research on dairy and fertility actually has stated that the findings as they relate to dairy need to be reproduced again to test validity.
I can’t afford a lot of these products but I think I will get back to doing oatmeal at the very least. Thanks for the tips.
Hi Amy….
I posted this question back in December and I think maybe with the Holidays it may have been overlooked!
Thanks
Mary 🙂
Hi there,
Im from Australia, are these American products? what ingredients would i be looking for to find a similliar product here?
Thanks =)
Corinna-
Look for a non soy vegan protein powder that is sweetened with natural low glycemic sweeteners like stevia and brown rice syrup.
I’m doing something similar that is AMAZING … and cheaper for all of you guys that are pinching pennies. I add a half of a banana, hand-full of fresh berries, 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder (brown rice) and a splash of water. I add milled flax seeds from time to time, but the protein is what curbs my cravings for carbs later in the day … it really does help a lot.

Hi Amy –
One quick question about the smoothie recipe. Do the raw oats mentioned refer to something like uncooked steel cut oats? Thanks!
Emma – use raw rolled oats not steel cut. Enjoy!
Amy, do you use coconut oil in it’s solid form or do you melt it first? Does it blend well? I just have a Magic Bullet, not a blender so I want to make sure it immulsifies 😉
Thanks!
Hello! I’d like to try this but have a fresh fruit allergy. Any substitute suggestions for the fruit?
Thanks!
Jessica – can you use frozen fruit? You could also use just ice, greens and raw cacao. Avocado would make it creamy.
I don’t get all these powders here. What should I do?? I’m from India. Help me out!! Also I stay at a hostel in my college. I got to take everything from home to my hostel as there are no shops In and out NY college campus.. So can u tell me the quantity also for each item that would come for 4 months atleast??
Thank you!
You are doing an amazing work of motivation and help through this app for women suffering through this disease that certainly brongs frustration and stress. I am surprised by your optimism. Thank you so much, so proud of you and may god bless you. Thanks again.
I’m not sure if anyone still has the original recipe for the smoothie, but if anyone does I would really appreciate it! It was one of my favorites and sad that I lost the paper I had printed out 🙂
